West Hollywood Boutique Wine Bar Shines

V Wine Bar

V Wine Bar

Approaching V wine bar, I wonder what the V stands for, maybe “very” secret location? Located on Westbourne, the cypress-lined street is a refreshing and peaceful change from a very bustling West Hollywood area.  On the shaded path, the V door is like a golden knob in a sea full of one-size fits all bars and sexy nightclubs.  And although this wine bar is off the beaten path from LA’s notable nightclubs and restaurants that line Santa Monica Boulevard, it’s charm and ambiance make it a must stop.

Walking into V Wine Room you feel like you’ve been transported into a 1930’s movie set. I picture The Mummy, where the mummy comes out of the secret library door and instead of killing you and dissolving into dust he sits down next to you and offers to buy you a glass of vino and you discuss Hemingway together and have a couple too many.

V is located in what used to be the library of Sherman (Sherman was the town before W.Hollywood) and still houses an actual library. As a cute detail, you can fill out a library card, noting what wines you tasted and what you liked as a reminder for when you return. And when you’re ready for the check , it’s presented on the inside cover of one of the greatest American Novels.

The history of the bar alone and its warm brick building makes this stop worthy if even for a look. Inside, warm furniture and a square marble topped bar area with the backdrop of a real library make this a wonderful place to sit and enjoy wine with friends and try some small production California wines. If food is on your mind, V offers a small plates menu in addition to coffee, tea, and select craft beers.

You can call this a boutique winery, but it’s more than that. The servers make the experience completely enjoyable and are more than happy to answer questions and offer sample tastings before purchases.  We order a bottle of the Four Brix Rose and sip the dry, light wine and enjoy the atmosphere before heading out to dinner at Connie and Ted’s.

Coffee and tea are also served in addition to the wines by the glass and bottle. If you’re in the mood for food, savory bites, including cheeses and cured meats are available for purchase.

A+ in my book.
