Who doesn’t love a great escape? These Northern California wine country escapes offer a little bit of something for everyone. From a working ranch, a culinary school, a B&B Zen landscape, to incredible views of vineyards as you soak in a claw foot tub, these hidden spots for wine country relaxation and romance will leave you feeling inspired and rejuvenated. Here’s my top 6 list for Northern California.
Auberge on the Vineyard – Located in the small town of Cloverdale, 80 miles north of san Francisco, this charming Victorian inn provides guests with a knockout views of vineyards. Guests can sit in the open-air verandah and enjoy a delicious French inspired gourmet breakfast. Book the Montrachet suite, which features a Jacuzzi tub for two with a picture perfect view of the vineyards. Rooms are comfortable and modestly decorated. Nearby wineries are located in Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. $$
The Gaige House, Glen Ellen – Located in beautiful Glen Ellen, Sonoma where Jack London once lived and wrote his famed novels, the Gaige House is certainly a nature and wine lover’s retreat. Set in a home built in the 1800’s, the sophisticated Asian inspired rooms are perfect for a romantic getaway. Situated alongside Calabaza creek, the inn is accentuated with a beautiful Zen landscape: a hammock shaded with ancient oaks, a miniature pagoda in a rock garden, a gurgling fountain. A gourmet breakfast is served each morning and guests are treated to a wine and cheese reception in the afternoon. $$$
Beltane Ranch, Glen Ellen – Surrounded by gardens, vineyards, and orchards Beltane Ranch is not only a working ranch but they now make their own wonderful estate wines. Accommodations include five rooms in the historic two-story main house and a separate cottage with a private cottage. Guests are treated to full breakfasts utilizing estate produce and local cheeses and meats. $$
Bernardus Lodge, Carmel Valley – Upon arrival guests are treated to local cheeses and Bernardus wine setting the tone for a very pampering experience. Set in a vineyard in beautiful Carmel Valley, you feel transported to a vineyard in Europe. Rooms have patios and balconies, fireplaces, large tubs, antiques, and Italian linens. The spa offers full-treatments and there is also a heated pool, two tennis courts, and a fitness center. The Lodge is located approximately 10 miles from downtown Carmel’s restaurants and shops. $$$
Meadowood, Napa – A lovely and luxurious 250 acre resort where you can play golf, croquet, tennis, hike and swim or just wine taste! The area is one of the most beautiful in Napa valley and driving through the gates you feel as you’ve entered a mountain escape and are immersed in nature. The resort also boasts a 3 Michelin star restaurant not to miss.
Ramekins, Sonoma – Offering guests a very unique cooking, food and lodging experience, Ramekins is in a perfect spot, just located walking distance from Sonoma Square shops and restaurants. Upstairs rooms include king size beds, rustic French antiques, and eco-friendly and organic bath and body products. Downstairs, you can try your hand at one of Ramekins cooking classes or private cooking lessons. Ramekins also offers culinary retreats for 2, 3, or 4 days. Retreats offer guests trips to local wineries and sustainable farms in the area and education on wine making. $$
